“You watched my body grow there. In your book you wrote about all the days planned for me before any of them had happened. Your thoughts are beyond my understanding. They cannot be measured!”
Have you ever felt so empty that you feel as if you only “exist” in this world? You wake up every day with anxiety, depression, and feeling lost and alone. But deep down, you also know there is more to life than just waking up each day and doing the same thing you do every day.
Life without God is very lonely. You often feel like something is missing. You have no joy, guidance, peace, or sense of purpose. All you know is you have to wake up each morning and live life all over again. But deep down, there is that voice telling you. “You are not in this world only to ‘exist’. I created you on purpose.”
You start seeing life differently when you realize you are valuable to God and believe you are HIS creation. You begin to appreciate the talents and gifts HE has given you for His glory. Life becomes joyful and purposeful. But I had to build a relationship with the Lord to understand everything. I knew that to find myself, I had to get to know HIM first.
I started making time for the Lord, which involved prayer, fasting, and reading the Bible. I was determined to find my true self, the person God created me to be. I had to learn to completely surrender all areas of my life to the Lord. I will share with you the things I did that helped me.
Prayer
I had to build a relationship with the Lord to find myself and know who God created me to be. Talking to him about anything and everything is very important to me. I wanted to include him in every aspect of life.
Three years ago, I stopped working; it was one of the loneliest seasons of my life. I remember feeling so lost and lonely. I was filled with so much anxiety that I was getting terrible headaches. Later, I found out those headaches were migraines caused by anxiety. I remember holding my head whenever I bent down to pick something up. I felt as if my eyes were going to pop out. That’s how horrible it was.
There were months when I couldn’t sleep. I would be up all night, thinking about life and my circumstances. How was I going to provide for my family? I had to figure things out independently, as I had always done. Little by little, I lost my confidence as a mother and woman.
One day, my mother gave me an excellent book that helped me change my life. Unfortunately, “En La Oscuridad, Resplandeceras!” is only Spanish. This book helped me see life differently and encouraged me to build a relationship with the Lord.
As I prayed, I asked the Lord to open my eyes and help me see things as he wanted me to. I prayed for wisdom and discernment. I prayed for healing from my past traumas and for the Holy Spirit to guide me through this path. I wanted to be obedient and become sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
I remember feeling desperate about finding my purpose. I was tired of feeling like life was the same daily routine with no purpose. Deep down, I felt so much void and knew there was more to life, but little did I know that empty space in my heart belonged to God.
As I started praying more and intentionally building a relationship with the Lord, the emptiness and loneliness went away. Instead of going to others to vent, I would go straight to the Lord. He will never tell anyone what you tell him; he will not judge you, and you can repeat yourself a million times about the same thing that is bothering or hurting you. After a while, when you vent to your friends or family, they get tired of hearing the same thing repeatedly. But not the Lord.
Talking to the Lord and surrendering all areas of your life to HIM will strengthen your faith. Faith is a form of hope or belief in something that cannot be seen. Remembering every time God has answered your prayers will help strengthen your faith and trust in him each time. It’s like keeping receipts of everything he has done for you. So, remember, when going through difficult times, ponder HIS faithfulness in your life.
My brothers and sisters, you will have many kinds of trouble. But this gives you a reason to be very happy. You know that when your faith is tested, you learn to be patient in suffering. If you let that patience work in you, the end result will be good. You will be all God wants you to be.
- James 1: 1-4 ERV
Bible
Another way to get to know God’s character is through HIS word. As you read the Bible, you see how God does things. You learn to be obedient and grow your faith. The Bible is filled with so much life. As you continue reading God’s word, you will see life differently. If you study the Bible, you will see that someone from the past has also faced things you may be facing now.
God uses his word to speak life into us and guide us every step of the way. It fills my heart with joy to know that God thought he needed a “Brenda” in this world. He created me on purpose. I remember reading Psalm 139:16-17 and crying. Like, WOW, GOD THOUGHT HE NEEDED SOMEONE LIKE ME ON THIS EARTH.
Meanwhile, my entire life, I thought I was a nobody. I thought I was on this earth to live, work, be a mother, and struggle for the rest of my life, just trying to figure out life alone. I was so miserable. I hardly smiled, and I was always negative. Nothing would ever go right for me. It was always something.
I didn’t know that God had his hand on me the entire time, blessing me, giving me the strength to endure what life was throwing at me, and providing for me each time.
For a long time, I thought that everything that happened in my life was either a coincidence or that I made it happen. But God’s mercy and grace were over my life. The more I read the Bible and pondered his word, the more I noticed his faithfulness. I started to regain my confidence and stopped living in fear, trying to figure out everything.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
- 2 Timothy 1:7
As I continued to read the Bible, I started to find my identity. I began to see the kind of woman God created me to be. This is when the healing process began. Once, I allowed the Lord to step in, open my eyes, and let His Holy Spirit lead me. I learned to love myself, accept myself, set boundaries, and let go of everything that was destroying me. I was determined to live life with Jesus. Because hello, he has done so many amazing things in my life. I can’t imagine living this thing called life without HIM again.
How does God see you?
You were created in HIS image.
You are loved
You were created to live for a purpose
You are worthy of grace and mercy
You are HIS children and friends
You are Valuable
You are an Ambassador of HIS Kingdom
Many times, I would feel a certain way, and I would look online for Bible verses that have to do with that emotion. I would open my Bible, look up the verse, and read the entire chapter. Most of the time, the Lord will reveal things through a verse. Don’t get me wrong; sometimes it’s not just things I want to hear, but there are also times when he convicts me about something. That’s how much the Lord loves us that His Holy Spirit keeps us on the right path.
Fixing your eyes on Jesus gives you the faith to focus.
- Pastor Michael Todd
God’s Promises
Focus on Jesus and his promises. When hard times come, ponder God’s promises and what he said about you. There are so many promises throughout the Bible. Here are a couple:
Unwavering Love and Protection (Isaiah 43:2)
Guidance and Strength (Isaiah 41:10)
Provision and Abundance (Philippians 4:19)
Peace and Comfort (John 16:33)
Forgiveness and Cleansing (1 John 1:9)
Salvation and Eternal Life (John 3:16)
Remember, the Bible is not just a book but a guide for your life!
Mindset
Shifting your mindset is not something you can do overnight, especially after having a negative mindset for many years. It takes time and help from the Lord. I was in a very dark space for a long time until one day, I cried out to the Lord for help. I asked the Lord to start changing me, to remove everything that didn’t please him. I prayed to help me live a Holy life and obey Him.
The Holy Spirit started working in me. I had to remove many things from my life. It started with what I listened to, what I watched, and the people I surrounded myself with. I started to see God removing people from my life and replacing them with new people.
When you seek to find yourself through God’s eyes, you align your identity with how He sees you, not how the world, your past, or even your doubts define you. God sees you as loved, worthy, and purposeful. If you have found yourself thinking you’re not enough, or comparing yourself to others, seeing yourself through God’s eyes means renewing your mind and replacing lies with truth.
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing and perfect will of God.
- Romans 12:2
God’s perspective brings healing and hope to your life. He will help you overcome shame, fear, or regret and help you walk in grace, forgiveness, and confidence. Your mindset needs to shift so you can start living boldly, loving more deeply, and embracing your unique purpose.
So, when the devil tries to tell you, “You are not enough,” you will remind him that you “are chosen, loved, and created for a purpose.” Don’t let the enemy continue to tell you lies. Remember what God has said about you.
Tip: Always have a notebook to write down everything he deposits in you so you can always go back and be reminded of what God has spoken to you.
Keeping a journal of gratitude can help you reflect on God’s faithfulness. Also, writing down everything God has said to you can help you during difficult times. Your faith and your trust in the Lord become stronger. You learn to trust HIM in all areas of your life.
Protect Eyes, Ears, Tongue, and Guard Your Heart
Eyes
The Bible tells us to protect our eyes, ears, tongue, and guard our hearts. I didn’t understand what this meant for a long time. Until the Holy Spirit convicted me about certain movies, songs, social media pages, and things I would say.
I used to love watching action movies, crime and detective movies or shows, and comedy. I remember those times when I would find a movie or show to watch and feel the Holy Spirit inside of me telling me to shut it off. And if you know that feeling, you know it’s like a desperate feeling. So, I would quickly turn it off.
The Lord showed me that I had to be careful about what I watched. We often sit down and watch things, thinking there is nothing wrong. But little do we know, we are opening the door for the devil to come into our homes.
We often see certain things on social media that we start to believe or that make us question God. They may sound very accurate, but you will be easily confused if you do not read the Word of God. That is what the enemy wants for us. He is deceitful and wants to confuse us, keeping us away from our father, God. The enemy knows how important you are to God and that there is a purpose behind your creation.
“I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless."
- Psalm 101:3The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!
- Matthew 6:22-23
Ears and Guard Your Heart
The Lord wants us to protect our ears and hearts. Why our ears? Because what we hear can shape our hearts, thoughts, and, eventually, our actions. If you listen to the Word of God, which is life, you will be aligned with who God says you are. If you are constantly being exposed to negative things, they can change you emotionally, filling you with anxiety and depression, stealing your peace and joy, and leaving you feeling lost without a purpose.
“Guard your heart above all else.” Wow, that is powerful! In Hebrew, the heart is the source of knowledge and decisions. The heart is the one that directs your decisions and your emotions. Your heart is who you are, the “real you.” So what comes out of your mouth is coming directly from your heart.
A few years ago, I was in a very bad relationship. I was so hurt and broken that I asked God why He gave me a good heart. Why do I always have to see the good in people? At that time, I wanted to be cold like my partner. As time passed, I became cold. I wasn’t the girl who was always laughing out loud, confident, and hopeful. I became so miserable, I didn’t want to leave the house, I didn’t want to be invited anywhere, I was in a very dark place mentally. Then God showed me what it’s like not having “my heart.” He allowed me to become like that person. I got to the point where I wanted to end my life. That was when I cried out to the Lord and asked for forgiveness. For being ungrateful, and I wanted my heart back. I wanted to be happy again, smile and laugh, be confident, hopeful, caring, and free again.
God healed my broken heart and removed that person from my life. I had to learn to forgive without an apology, which is very hard. If you’ve experienced a similar situation, you know what I mean.
Learn to forgive and stop holding grudges. Ask God to help you let go of the things hurting you. To help you forgive those who have hurt you, even if they never apologize. To help you see them with love. Because our father wants us to love our brothers and sisters the same way we love ourselves. No matter what you do, guard your heart; do not let evil flow from it.
My son, pay attention to my words; listen closely to my sayings, don’t lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to one’s whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.
- Proverbs 4: 20-23
Tongue
The tongue is small but very powerful. Words can either build you up or tear you down. You can either speak life or cause harm. God wants us to speak with kindness, thoughtfulness, love, and self-control. We should avoid gossip, slander, lies, and harsh words. He wants us to use our words to build up and not tear down.
When you look in the mirror, speak to yourself with love and kindness, always remembering who you are in God’s eyes. Every word you speak towards yourself has weight. It can either uplift you or break you. Ponder God’s word, promises, and faithfulness.
God sees us as valuable, holy, and set apart. He calls us to speak in a way that reflects HIM. When you protect your speech, you are really protecting your identity in Him.
It is important to guard the tongue because your wisdom is shown when you speak or stay silent. Jesus has shown us in the Bible that our words reflect our hearts, character, attitudes, and intentions. So yes, the tongue may be small, but it is very powerful.
A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge attractive, but the mouth of fools blurts out foolishness. The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, observing the wicked and the good. The tongue that heals is a tree of life, but a devious tongue breaks the spirit.
- Proverbs 15:1-4
Fasting
I needed a breakthrough and wanted to become closer to the Lord. I desperately needed my alone time with HIM in HIS presence. I prayed for the Holy Spirit to change me, show me all the things that didn’t please the Lord, help me with my mindset and past traumas, and help me surrender all areas of my life to HIM so he could do as he pleases with me.
When you fast, especially from food, social media, or other distractions, you create space that helps you tune out the world, inner critic, and fear to hear God more clearly. This is when His voice becomes louder because you have silenced all the background noises.
Fasting humbles you and recenters your identity. It reminds you that your worth doesn’t come from how you look, what you have achieved, or what others think. It comes from being a child of God; you are created in His image.
As I continued to fast, my relationship with the Lord became stronger. I started to discern His voice and see more clearly. My faith grew so much that when I was in need, I would ask God in prayer to provide for me, believe it, and go on with my day. He always provided. Whether it was with cake or dessert orders, or someone dropping off groceries. When I tell you he always came through, he always came through! During this season of my life, He showed me He was the only one in control.
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and unite the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”
- Isaiah 58:6
What’s Next?
When you start to see your value and worth and the amazing person God created you to be through HIS lens rather than yours, you will start to feel confident and worthy. You will feel joyful and purposeful.
Get to know the Holy Spirit. He will guide you through this beautiful path the Lord created for you and me. The Holy Spirit is our friend, guide, counselor, and comforter. He knows the desires of your heart and is the only one who knows all the desires of God’s heart.
Building a relationship with the Lord through prayer, studying the Bible, and fasting will help you shift your mindset and grow spiritually. By doing these things, you will become sensitive to HIS voice. He will teach you that protecting your eyes, ears, and tongue and guarding your heart are very important for your spiritual growth and walk with Christ.
Remember, the tongue is very powerful! Do not speak negatively about yourself. Remember God’s promises and that you are a CHILD OF GOD. Every time the enemy tries to knock you down with a lie, rebuke him and replace that lie with a living truth, which is our savior’s truth: Christ Jesus, the one who died on the cross for you and me to be free of all sins.
Have you accepted Jesus as your only savior yet?
It’s okay if you haven’t; you can do it now. Say these words: Dear Lord Jesus, I believe that you are the Son of God and Savior of the world. I believe that you died for my sins and rose from the dead. I believe that through your sacrifice, I am a new person. Forgive me for my sin and fill me with your Spirit. Today, I choose to follow you for the rest of my life as Lord of my life. Amen!
